Krehel Automotive Goes Green

During the recent expansion at Krehel Automotive in which we more than doubled the building, many energy and environmental savings were incorporated.

1. Twenty skylights were installed allowing us to work in the shop during daytime hours with no lights (other than droplights). This results in a huge savings of electricity.
2. The walls of the shop are painted white and the floors are painted gray to help reflect natural light.
3. All droplights are fluorescent again reducing electrical demand (vs. incandescent bulbs).
4. The latest T5 H/O light fixtures were installed in the shop.  Each fixture when “on” produces more light than the metal halide lamps, but with 25% less electrical usage.
5. To go even further, we wired each lamp fixture with two switches, allowing us to turn on either 2, 4 or all 6 bulbs as needed.  With this design, lighting 2 bulbs can be used to supplement skylights on overcast days and 4 bulbs to light shop at night.
6. Abundant insulation of both the roof and walls, along with well insulated shop doors, far surpass the required commercial energy codes and will reduce heat requirements in the winter.
7. A well insulated building allowed us to air condition the shop area, along with the office space.
8. The air conditioners are energy efficient, and have economizers which sense outside air temperature, eliminating unnecessary use.
9. In addition to all of the energy efficient equipment installed, Krehel Automotive has always recycled any and all waste that is allowed by law.  This includes, paper, cardboard (corrugated cardboard compacter on site) oil, batteries, glass, metal (scrap and aluminum) and plastics.
